“Will I disappear without a trace too? I’m petrified.” Her voice edged with fear.

“I have no answers to your inquiry, and I don’t know the man who entered your space. Did the man give his name?”

“No.”

“Extra protection posted around you. You are in grave danger, and I am sorry I persuaded you to come.” He hung his head and paced the floor.

“Don’t be upset, Jon. I promised to resolve your water problem, no matter the outcome.”

“Okay, glad you’ll stay.” He paused and stared in her direction, and she glimpsed his watery eyes. Her heart sank at the sadness he endured.

“For the record, let me enlighten you on our substandard microchip lab. Our council members received a letter from the government asking us to beta test the new microchip implants.”

“They selected your town as the beta test site for the entire region, and you didn’t find it strange?”

“Yes, at first. But we requested a clause in the contract with the government; If the town did not want the technology, we could withdraw our commitment. We were told we could use the tattoo method. It didn’t go well. The religious citizens refused the chip. Several corporations required employees to receive the chip to keep their data safe. People started moving away, advising family and friends to avoid Romala as a family city. They informed us we could lose federal monies if we didn’t comply.”
