Excerpt from Perfidy


“Mrs. Northrop, I must inform you that there have been many mysterious disappearances across the globe in the last three days. Given these troubling events, the established NWA government implemented martial law to keep peace and stability.”

He leaned closer and locked his intense blue eyes with mine as he studied my face. I have never seen a humanoid robot display aggression, but the designers programmed these humanoids to instill fear in their passengers for the military. I can confirm its success because I was a bundle of nerves.

“The NWA requested people take the dragon’s mark to buy, sell, enter buildings, and live their lives—a device that tracks everyone’s location. NWA put out a statement declaring martial law and determined to prevent any more vanishings. You can appreciate the urgency since you work for a government affiliate.”

I swallowed hard, my fear preventing me from seeking further clarification. The humanoid robot’s emotionless stare scared me as I glimpsed its mouth move with perfect precision.
